چکیده

Segregation of granular materials composed of different-sized particles has important repercussions in various industrial processes and natural phenomena, but predicting size segregation remains a challenging problem. To address this problem, we have developed a theoretical model that captures the interplay between advection, segregation, and diffusion in size bidisperse granular materials. The fl uxes associated with these three driving factors depend on the underlying kinematics, whose characteristics play key roles in determining particle segregation confi gurations. Unlike earlier models for segregation, our model uses parameters based on kinematics from discrete element method simulations instead of arbitrarily adjustable fi tting parameters, and it achieves excellent quantitative agreement with both experimental and simulation results when applied to quasi-two dimensional bounded heaps and circular rotating tumblers. The model yields two dimensionless control parameters, both of which are only functions of control parameters (feed rate, particle sizes, and system size) and kinematic parameters (diffusion coeffi cient, fl owing layer depth, and percolation velocity). The Péclet number, Pe, captures the interplay of advection and diffusion, and the second dimensionless parameter, Λ, describes the interplay between segregation and advection. A parametric study of Λ and Pe demonstrates how particle segregation confi guration depends on the interplay of advection, segregation, and diffusion. In bounded heap fl ow, the particle segregation confi gurations are determined by advection, segregation, and diffusion depending on fl ow conditions and particle properties. In contrast, in circular tumbler fl ow, the fi nal particle segregation confi gurations depend primarily on the competition between segregation and diffusion, and segregation rates are determined by advection and the fl owing layer thickness. Modeling density segregation in flowing bidisperse granular materials

Preventing segregation in flowing granular mixtures is an ongoing challenge for industrial processes that involve the handling of bulk solids. A recent continuum-based modeling approach accurately predicts spatial concentration fields in a variety of flow geometries for mixtures varying in particle size. This approach captures the interplay between advection, diffusion, and segregation using ki...

Predicting polydisperse granular segregation

Most granular materials in industrial applications and natural settings are size-polydisperse, but most models and simulations of segregation consider only bidisperse particle distributions. Here, we extend our recently developed theoretical advection–diffusion–segregation model to polydisperse particle distributions. To test the theoretical approach, we model and simulate grains log-normally d...

Mixing and Segregation of Granular Materials

Granular materials segregate. Small differences in either size or density lead to flow-induced segregation, a complex phenomenon without parallel in fluids. Modeling of mixing and segregation processes requires the confluence of several tools, including continuum and discrete descriptions (particle dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, cellular automata computations) and, often, considerable geome...

Suppression and emergence of granular segregation under cyclic shear.

While convective flows are implicated in many granular segregation processes, the associated particle-scale rearrangements are not well understood. A three-dimensional bidisperse mixture segregates under steady shear, but the cyclically driven system either remains mixed or segregates slowly. Individual grain motion shows no signs of particle-scale segregation dynamics that precede bulk segrega...

Fluid-induced particle-size segregation in sheared granular assemblies.

We perform a two-dimensional molecular-dynamics study of a model for sheared bidisperse granular systems under conditions of simple shear and Poiseuille flow. We propose a mechanism for particle-size segregation based on the observation that segregation occurs if the viscous length scale introduced by a liquid in the system is smaller than of the order of the particle size. We show that the rat...
